Poor video quality aside, I hope everyone can see this SUPER, AWESOMELY ACCURATE message shine through. Let’s map out the key lessons we learn from watching this commercial:
- Marriage is the union of a man and a woman
- Marriage has served society well for THOUSANDS of years
- Marriage provides children the best chance of being raised by a mother and father
- Children do best when raised by their married Mom and Dad
- Everyone is entitled to love and respect, but no one is entitled to redefine marriage
Very very important lessons to learn! Over the weekend, I saw these commercials aired on AMC in the middle of The Walking Dead marathon (how appropriate… yet the hypocrisy of this is another topic for another day). I was immediately stunned by this fantastic message filled with hearts, stars, horse shoes, clovers, and blue moons.
And we must’n forget the beautiful comments I found when searching for an online version of this ad. My favorite so far being:
“It is good to see conservatives standing up against this sort of nonsense in Maryland. What next, equal opportunity requirements to make companies hire gay, transgender, and every other mixed up condition the human mind can muster? The state is over-run with liberals and as a result, it has dysfunctional government, terrible school system, high taxes, high crime, and loads of lazy bums skimming off the public dole, who have no interest in working. Mark my words, MD will implode when the federal government stops spending money at insane and unsustainable levels. When that happens, there will be gangs of hungry immoral punks raping and pillaging the public. Think that could never happen? Open up a history book.” – Courtesy this article
This commercial ignores the fact that:
- Marriage HAS been redefined more than once.
- Who really defines marriage anyway?
- There are more factors than death and divorce that could create a toxic marriage environment for children.
- Gay marriage NOT being one of them.
- This commercial is being aired right after a show about zombies and, essentially, the devil….. but whatever. Guess the devil is better than marriage equality.
I also guess that the 1967 United States Supreme Court decision on Loving vs. Virginia doesn’t matter. -- “There can be no doubt that restricting the freedom to marry solely because of racial classifications violates the central meaning of the equal protection clause.” Anti-miscegenation laws were state laws banning interracial marriage, mainly forbidding marriage between non-whites and whites.
Not only this, but there are plenty of marriages that happen for the WRONG reasons creating loveless homes, domestic abuse, addiction and dependency issues, and many many other things that have NOTHING to do with the gender of the parties involved.
Fortunately enough for me, I was able to attend a Marriage Equality Rally on 10/11 at my school (the good ol’ University of Maryland). About 200 students were in attendance, holding signs in support of Question 6, cheering as we all listened to U.S. Senator Ben Cardin, State Senator Rich Madaleno, State Delegate Heather Mizeur, and State Delegate Luke Clippinger. There seems to be hope for such a basic human rights agenda. Perhaps the question on question 6 would make more sense if the opposing side presented a more substantial argument. However, I have yet to see one that uses a solid, academic study, that suggests children will ultimately fail if raised in a same-sex household. And let’s not mention how many single mothers and single fathers are discredited by the very sentiments listed earlier.
Hopefully people have the sense to do what’s right. Someone else getting married has no affect on you.
